The holidays are almost here and 2019 with it. Before the madness of the season begins it's best to start thinking about your marketing for next year.

Social media remains one of the smartest, most effective and inexpensive marketing platforms for businesses everywhere. One million active users join various social media platforms everyday – nowadays there are about 3.03 billion active users worldwide.

So to help you get in the right mindset and start using your social channels more effectively next year, I have the three hottest social media trends for 2019 that you just MUST know.

Influencer marketing has been around and hot for some time.

This particular marketing strategy is when the focus is placed on influential people rather than the target market as a whole. It identifies the individuals that have influence over potential customers and utilizes them to share your messaging and general ideas.

It differs from celebrity endorsements and spokespersons because influencer marketing is word-of-mouth advertising using people that are trusted in certain circles. On the contrary, a spokesperson or celeb specifically attaches their fame to a brand or product.

Now major influencers these days may still request a hefty price tag, but microinfluencers who aren’t huge internet stars yet (but who are still influential on their level) are your new best bet.

Micro-influencers, in fact, could be more helpful to your social media marketing because they’re usually regular people that your customers can relate to.

YouTube and Instagram are two simple mediums where you can utilize a microinfluencer. Try creating a series of short videos hosted by your microinfluencer on YouTube. For Instagram, let the microinfluencer take over your account for a day/week/etc.

2019 Social Trend #2: Social Listening

Social media listening is an act of using a tool to listen to what is being said about your brand (or any other keyword or set of keywords) across social media and the web. It’s kind of like Google Alerts on steroids.

Essentially, it’s not enough anymore to just HAVE a social profile and post and maybe respond to anyone who mentions you.

According to a study by Brandwatch, 96% of the people that discuss brands online do not follow those brands’ owned profiles. So it’s highly probable that you’re missing about 90% of conversations revolving around your brand.

How to do social listening? If you’re using a tool for your social like Sprout or Hootsuite it’ll be easier because most of the time you can set up phrases and words and it'll let you know and show you those when they're used. Then you can jump into the conversations you're notified about.

For example, if you are a real estate agent, maybe set up the term “house hunting” and you’ll see tweets, comments, etcetera of people that use that phrase so you can jump in on the conversation.

This flowery phrase simply means any visual content that’s not permanent. That’s right, ephemeral content is there for a limited number of hours.

Before you write this off as silly and that spending time to create marketing that only lasts for a small amount of time is a waste, let me tell you: Instagram Stories and Snapchat, two channels that feature ephemeral content have 450 million daily users combined. And those are free platforms too!

The strategy behind ephemeral content is FOMO, or fear of missing out! The fact that your content disappears in a day makes people feel excluded if they miss it.

Moreover, this type of content gives viewers an opportunity to react almost immediately, which makes them feel seen. Not only do they feel respected by your company, but they get even more engaged in the present moment.

My best suggestion with getting started with ephemeral content is to start doing Facebook stories and more Instagram stories. Especially if you’re on these platforms already and post there regularly, doing a little more every day or week is a simple continuation.
